Meet Coach Zak

I grew up playing soccer in Ottawa. At 15, I had the chance to play for Nacional AC’s U-16 program in Brazil. I went on to earn a U.S. college scholarship and play professionally in Germany, Australia, Portugal, and with USL’s Las Vegas Lights FC. I’ve trained with Canada’s men’s national team and played with and against players such as Alphonso Davies. I’m now based in Toronto, where I run CANXL, continue to play semi-pro outdoors, and compete in arena soccer with the Canadian Crusaders (2025–26 MLIS champs!) I recently completed a Master in Football Business through the Johan Cruyff Institute in partnership with FC Barcelona.

The path that shaped my coaching

My playing career has taken me through different countries, teams, and styles of soccer. In Brazil, I played against Neymar. Later, I balanced college soccer and a degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science before continuing my playing career overseas and in the United States.

Moving between those environments taught me to adapt. It also showed me how much a player can gain from clear coaching, honest feedback, and training that connects to what happens in a match. That’s what I try to bring to my work now.

How I work with players

I start by learning what the player wants to improve. We look at where they are now, then focus on the next useful step, whether that’s a more reliable first touch, better decisions under pressure, confidence in one-on-one situations, or preparation for a tryout.

I’ve coached players at different stages, from beginners and late starters to competitive youth players, adults returning to soccer, and professionals looking for focused work outside team training. The sessions are shaped around the player, not pulled from a one-size-fits-all plan.

My Kinesiology background and recent studies in football business also inform how I think about development, from the details of a training session to the opportunities available to players and coaches.

Why I brought back CANXL

CANXL’s camps and clinics date back to the 90s. I brought the name back and built it into a Toronto training program offering private sessions, small groups, camps, and clinics.

I want CANXL to be useful beyond the players I can coach myself. That’s why I also create resources and training for soccer trainers who want to improve their sessions and build a sustainable coaching business.

Access matters too. CANXL offers scholarship and subsidized opportunities for players who need them. My aim is to help more people get good coaching and stay connected to the game.
